Silvio’s Coffee House

I do like to frequent the Shoreditch area, more specifically that stretch where Old Street becomes Great Eastern Street, and last night was no exception. I met up with the usual suspects for a swift ale at the Griffin. The pub that has remained the same for years. It’s not the best looking boozer in town but no one can deny it has character. There’s always a DJ sat at the back playing an old tune you haven’t heard in ages. I rarely stand inside if it’s not raining out though. That’s where we all take up our roots. But today isn’t so much about the Griffin it’s about the lovely little Silvio’s Coffee House that sits opposite, on the corner.

As I had a light lunch I was feeling peckish and wanted a nibble so a friend and I nipped over the road to re-energise and I am very glad we did. It was getting a little late and the 2 remaining staff (one the chef) looked like they were ready to pack up but greeted us kindly and were happy to whip us up something from the menu. To me that was a good start and worthy of a tick in the box. The guy serving politely informed us that they couldn’t offer any of the bottled beers, which wasn’t a problem. It’s not the done thing I know but I’d brought a bottle of Sol with me from the Griffin and the guy was fine with it. That was my service tick number two.

It’s a small place but utilises the space well, with large shoulders of meat on display and fresh coffees and International teas in large jars. Wooden stools (painted silver) and tables dot the floor.

My mate and I shared a couple of platters. One an assortment of cheeses and the other of cured meats. This came with some delicious home made bread and an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. The cheeses were amazing. From the strong to the mild, they had flavour, real flavour. In truth I am unsure if these were home made but I’d have to say yes. The meat selection was equally as fantastic. I’m a sucker for cured meats so I may be biased but I also think that makes me a good judge. The bread was delicious so its obvious that this stays fresh for a healthy amount of time.

It’s true it was a fleeting visit but the food got an enthusiastic two thumbs up and the polite, helpful guy that served us kept those thumbs aloft. I guarantee I’m going back to attack something else on the menu like one of their Ciabattas, which I’ve heard are pretty good.
